Yaowarat road and Chinatown.

On the western banks of the Chao Phraya river in the Thai capital Bangkok, in the city’s oldest area, you will find the busy business center better known as Sam Peng Market. You are now standing in the middle of Bangkok’s Chinatown, the main trading area for the big Chinese community, which was over 200 years ago located on the grounds of what is now Wat Phra Kaew, the Grand Palace.

In the area you’ll find many narrow alleys filled with shops and vendors selling all kinds of goods, from clothing, make-up to consumer electronics. Many of the goods sold here are cheap copies produced in China and imported by Thai-Chinese traders. Around Sam Pend market you will find many shops selling gold, electronics, computer parts, second-hand goods, souvenirs, textiles and many unthinkable items.

The modern Chinatown covers Yaowarat road, which in nighttime changes into a well known “food street” attrattracting tourists as well as locals and Charoen Krung Road, which crosses the river and host many Karaoke pubs.
