Located about 1 km. north of the hot tourist attraction Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, you
seem to come in a different world.

You just entered the world famous ” backpacker ghetto ” in which Leonardo Di Caprio drank snake
blood in the blockbuster movie ‘the Beach’.
This is Kkaosan road or translated ‘milled rice’ road, referring to the old traditional function of the
area as Bangkok’s rice market.
The old style traditional houses in the area still remind people of its old function, however these
days you will find backpackers from all corners of the world roaming the street looking for a cheap
room to spend some nights, cheap restaurants, internet places tour organizers and outdoor clothing
vendors.

Many of the visitors use Khaosan as a gateway to travel, because many tour operators work from
this area and organize bustrips to all parts of the kingdom as well as nearby countries as Laos,
Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Beside the many guesthouses, restaurants both with local as well as foreign cuisine the street offers
you a variety of shops who offer handcrafts, clothing’s, pirate cd and dvd’s, and paperwork like
driver’s licenses, university degrees, etc.

The lively street is know for its nightlife as well and during the evening not only attracts foreign
tourists, but many young female and male locals who like to get to meet new (foreign friends).
